About the Stroke Research Unit
The Stroke Unit within the Neurology Department is one of ten comprehensive stroke centres in Australia with 24/7 endovascular clot retrieval capacity, hosting Australia's first stroke unit and with an outpatient stroke prevention clinic and rapid access Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) service. The Neurology Department provides comprehensive services within stroke, epilepsy, neuroimmunology and neurodiagnostic testing, and is committed to the provision of high quality patient care, teaching and clinical research. Stroke research is actively conducted within this unit, from academic projects to ground-breaking early phase clinical trials.
About the Stroke Research Nurse role
This role supports expanding activities and ongoing growth within the Stroke Research Unit. The Stroke Research Nurse will be responsible for quality data management, recruitment and study coordination of stroke clinical trials, collaborative group and investigator-initiated research projects. The role requires close liaison with other members of the research team, and the provision of research-related education to staff, patients and their families. This role is based within N-CRESS, Austin's Neuroimmunology Service, who will provide Ethics and governance oversight of projects, and support and mentor the new team member.
A regular day will see you:
- Liaising with other members of the research and clinical team to identify possible participants for clinical research
- Overseeing the clinical management of the participant while on the clinical trial/research project, escalating any clinical concerns to the Principal Investigator/neurology team
- Performing study related assessments and activities relating to stroke clinical trials
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with staff, patients and their families/carers
- Providing education and information on clinical trials
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct clinical research in accordance with TGA ICH GCP and the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research involving Humans
- Accurately collect documentation and enter data necessary for the conduct of research
- Maintain adherence to research protocol
- Actively seek to enhance recruitment to research projects
- Demonstrate autonomy, initiative, compassion, clinical excellence and leadership in stroke patient management
About you
As the Stroke Research Nurse, you will be someone who has excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work, and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.
To be successful in this role, you'll bring with you:
- Excellent team-working skills with demonstrated attention to detail, autonomy and initiative
- Patient-focused nursing care with strong clinical skills and capacity to triage
- Excellent communication skills and capacity to deliver educational presentations at a range of levels of health literacy
- Prior knowledge/experience in clinical trials, ideally in the field of stroke/neurology
- Enthusiasm, positivity and flexibility
- Strong advocacy skills
