Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

Austin Health is committed to creating an environment where all staff can contribute their ideas and unique perspectives in a meaningful way, and feel safe and accepted being their true selves. We support a strong, diverse and effective team of professionals to deliver excellent healthcare services to our community.

We are proud to be a workplace that champions diversity, equity and inclusion for our staff, volunteers, patients, visitors and community. Our Diversity and Inclusion Plan 2020-23 (PDF - 1.62 MB) celebrates the many differences that our people bring to the workforce and creates an environment where their individual contributions are embraced, valued and supported.

Our Diversity and Inclusion Plan for 2024 and beyond is currently in development.

We know that having a diverse group of people working with us across the organisation enables us to be more effective, innovative, and creative, and to better understand and reflect the community we serve. Our goal is for our people to feel safe, included and supported so they can be at their best every day.

We encourage talented people from all backgrounds, abilities, and identities to apply for any of our advertised career opportunities.

Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is captured in a range of strategic documents and supported by representative committees and informal staff networks.

This is an ongoing journey for our organisation and our community, where we must continually reflect, learn and grow.

Gender equity

Austin Health is committed to enabling and driving gender equity across our workforce. Under the Gender Equality Act 2020, we are required to undertake regular audits of pay, conditions and culture, and to develop and report on a Gender Equality Action Plan.

We strive to ensure our policies and procedures are gender equitable, including:

  • remuneration
  • family violence leave
  • parental leave for all genders
  • flexible work.

We celebrate International Women’s Day and reflect on our responsibility to improve health outcomes for women.

Our Family Violence contact officer program reflects our efforts to support and empower victim/survivors.

We have a Gender Equity Committee of staff from across the organisation who guide this work.

LGBTQIA+

Austin Health values the many valuable contributions of our LGBTQIA+ staff and is committed to ensuring they feel safe, supported, and respected in the workplace. Our commitment to inclusivity is evident through initiatives such as the Emergency Department LGBTQIA+ Committee and the online Pride Employee Network. These platforms provide a space for sharing experiences, celebrating milestones like IDAHOBIT and Wear it Purple Day, and connecting with the broader community through events like Midsumma Carnival and Pride March.

We recognise the ongoing journey towards creating a fully inclusive environment for its LGBTQIA+ staff and community. We are actively taking steps to ensure everyone feels safe and welcome, such as implementing the ability to display pronouns on Microsoft Teams and making pronoun badges and rainbow lanyards available to all staff.

People with disability

Austin Health aims to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive culture where our people are valued. We are committed to providing tools, support, facilities, and training that enable all our people to bring their whole selves to work and to enable our staff to build inclusive workplaces for employees with disability.

We champion the social model of disability and recognises that people with disability face many barriers to health care, employment and career progression.

Our Disability Action Plan 2023-26 lays the foundation for our organisational approach to all disability related improvement work. The plan is overseen by the Disability Inclusion Committee, which includes staff and consumers with disability.

We are committed to working towards an accessible workplace for all employees through the recruitment process and during employment. Adjustments are available and we can access federal funding from the Employment Assistance Fund (EAF) to support these adjustments as appropriate.

If you would like to discuss any workplace adjustments, please reach out to the hiring manager listed in the job ad. Otherwise feel free to connect with the Diversity and Inclusion team: diversity&inclusion@austin.org.au.

People from diverse cultural or religious backgrounds

Austin Health recognise that our people are our greatest strength, and we are proud to employ people who identify across a diverse range of cultures that are representative of the communities we serve.

Together, we recognise and celebrate days of cultural significance with our staff and consumers and look to build the knowledge and skills of our staff to create a more inclusive and effective health service.
