  • Connection to our Aboriginal Health Program Ngarra Jarra team.
  • Cultural and ceremonial leave – Austin Health supports equal opportunity in employment and part of that commitment is recognising that there may be occasions where leave is required to deal with matters of cultural importance.
  • Our Commitment to Reconciliation: Austin Health has an Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan and Aboriginal Employment Plan, which outline our support to improving the employment, retention and career progression outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
  • Indigenous Staff Network: Employees who have identified themselves as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander are invited to join our staff network who meet monthly to connect and yarn.
  • Cultural events: Austin Health celebrates and recognises significant annual cultural events throughout the year such as, Reconciliation Week, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day and NAIDOC Week.

Aboriginal employment plan

We want our people to have opportunities to continue to grow and develop their skillsets while they work at Austin Health.

Our Aboriginal Employment Plan 2021-24 will guide our priorities and ensure that we are focused on initiatives that support us to attract, retain and develop Aboriginal employees.

We recognise that providing meaningful employment and development opportunities has the potential to transform the lives of Aboriginal people, their families and the community. We also appreciate that employing Aboriginal staff will support our patients and have a significantly positive impact on the care that we provide them and the experience of their community who support them through their health journey.

Accordingly, we are committed to taking deliberate steps to increase our Aboriginal workforce encouraging them with their career goals and aspirations and ensuring that they feel safe and supported in their roles.

Transport and childcare

Austin Health provides onsite car parking facilities for its employees. Fees may be deducted from your salary and can be salary packaged to reduce the cost. End of journey facilities are provided for cyclists at all sites.

Austin Health is located across three sites in Melbourne which are all accessible via public transport. Austin Hospital is located directly opposite the Heidelberg train station, and a free shuttle bus service runs every 15 minutes between Austin Hospital and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.

We have a childcare centre located onsite at Austin Hospital, available from 6.45am to 6pm. And we also have parents’ breastfeeding rooms available for staff at all sites.
