About the Neurology Department

The Department of Neurology at Austin Health is one of Victoria’s largest and most comprehensive neurology units, renowned for its excellence in clinical care, research, and education. It has established an international reputation in the management of stroke, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis, while also providing expert services across all major neurological subspecialties, including movement disorders, neuroimmunology, neuro-oncology, neurophysiology, and neuropsychiatry. 

 

About the role 

The Stroke Fellow position is designed to provide advanced clinical training in both acute stroke care and general neurology. The fellow plays a central role in the management of stroke patients across inpatient and outpatient settings, developing expertise in emergency decision-making for thrombolysis and endovascular therapies, and gaining hands-on experience in neurodiagnostic procedures. With responsibilities that include ward rounds, consultations, and on-call duties, the fellow operates as a key member of the stroke team, progressively building autonomy in clinical judgment and procedural competence.

 

Beyond clinical care, the role supports the fellow’s academic and professional development through active participation in clinical research, teaching, and quality improvement initiatives. As a sub-investigator in multiple trials, the fellow contributes to the advancement of stroke treatment while also engaging in the education of junior medical staff and students. This well-rounded position ensures the fellow develops the clinical, procedural, and academic skills required for a successful career in vascular neurology or broader neurological practice.

 

A regular day will see you:   

  • Manage stroke inpatients and participate in daily ward rounds.
  • Provide stroke inpatients and participate in daily ward rounds
  • Participate in decision-making for thrombolysis and endovascular therapy
  • Regular attendance at outpatient clinics each week, including General and Headache
  • Gain expertise in care outpatient and inpatient with first line decision maker for Neurology and stroke on call cases (with stroke team support)

 

About you 

As the Stroke Fellow, you will be someone who has excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work, and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.

 

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Neurology/Stroke
  • Registration a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) - (note eligible applicants will be assisted through this process).
  • Have ongoing Modified Rankin Scale Certification
