About the Microbiology Department

Austin Pathology is committed to the provision of high quality, comprehensive, evidence-based pathology services in a timely, cost effective and ethical manner, to meet the needs of our customers. We ensure thorough training and professional development of our staff, while maintaining a high level of activity in research and education.

 

Microbiology utilises state of the art automation and technologies as well conventional manual methodology to generate clinically valuable information for diagnosis and treatment of infections

 

About the role 

As the Grade 1 Scientist, you will be proficient in all areas of the laboratory with the ability to assist in providing a broad range of relevant laboratory services.

 

A regular day will see you:   

  • Perform, read and interpret laboratory procedures, tests and assays
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment as per laboratory procedures; including but not limited to validation, verification, calibration, preventative maintenance, safety protocols and Quality Control
  • Participate in external Quality Assurance Programs
  • Comply with Pathology Quality Management; including, but not limited to, reporting of Quality Incidents and Quality Improvements, document acknowledgement
  • Maintain training and competency levels in accordance with documented laboratory methods, procedures and policies
  • Work within a rotating 24 hour roster with predominant overnight shifts

 

About you 

You will be someone who has excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work, and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.

 

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

  • Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine degree, or alternative/equivalent science degree recognised by AIMS, AACB, AAM, ASC, ASM
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritise and to cope with stressful and emergency situations
  • Ability to cope with continuous change
