About the Rheumatology Department

The Rheumatology Department is managed by Specialty & Statewide Services – Medical and Cancer Services Division which is part of the Chief Operating Directorate.

The Rheumatology unit at Austin Health is a busy Unit providing both in-and out-patient services. It is staffed by the Director and supported by a robust team of fractional specialists, junior medical and nursing staff.

The Unit has a breadth of expertise and experience, particularly in autoimmune diseases, ankylosing spondylitis, polymyalgia rheumatica. vasculitis and advanced imaging including musculoskeletal ultrasound. It is the third largest Rheumatology provider in Victoria with two accredited core Advanced Trainees and a part-time Senior Rheumatology Registrar (non-core) position.

The Unit prides itself in the level of teaching and clinical research activity supported within the department.  This includes a dedicated Clinical Trials Unit carrying out industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies. 

 

About the role:

  • Hours per week: 4.5
  • Employment status:  Fixed-term Fractional 
  • Appointment period: 3rd August 2026 to 29th January 2027
  • Location:  Working in the Friday AM Autoimmune Clinic at Austin Health Repatriation Hospital - Specialist Clinics

 

As the Austin Health Rheumatologist you will be responsible for:

  • Providing comprehensive management of outpatients.
  • Providing a consultative service to other units as required.
  • Supervising trainees and junior medical staff as required.

 

About you

Austin Health Rheumatology Consultants possess excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.


To be successful for this role you must: 

  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Hold a Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists.
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to undertake the defined scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate commitment to high quality patient care.
  • Demonstrate commitment and ongoing activity in research and/or clinical audit activities
  • Be involved in teaching and training of medical, technical and nursing staff, including at undergraduate and post-graduate level
  • Demonstrate engagement, teamwork and collaboration.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to Clinical Governance.
