About the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit

The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit specialises in microsurgical reconstruction for breast, head and neck cancer, as well as upper limb reanimation in tetraplegic patients. The unit manages a large number of general plastic surgery cases, including elective and post-traumatic hand surgery., facial trauma, melanoma and provides a broad reconstructive service to all specialties. There are more than 2,300 surgical procedures performed a year, including 100+ free flaps.

 

The unit consists of s15 attending Plastic Surgeons, 2 local Accredited Registrars, 1 local Unaccredited Registrar and 3 Residents. The unit

 

About the role

As the Fellow, you will be responsible for the day to day running of the Plastic Surgery Unit with local accredited registrars, in consultation with the faculty members.

 

Key accountabilities in the role will include:

 

  • Ensuring all theatre lists/clinics have appropriate cover, across all sites where Austin Health provides plastic & reconstructive surgery services, including the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.
  • Managing and attending 2-3 outpatient clinics per week, this includes post-operative clinics, consultant clinic, upper limb reanimation clinics
  • Participation in on-call roster on occasion to fill-in or cover for registrars on leave
  • Supervision and teaching of registrars, residents and medical students
  • Research is encouraged, ideally submit abstract for presentation at annual Australasian or international plastic surgery meeting

 

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring with you:

 

  • Registration with the Medical Board of Victoria (AHPRA)
  • Completed specialist training in accredited Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery program including exit exams.
  • Demonstrated clinical practice at a high standard
  • Well-developed communication, negotiation, and presentation skills in English
  • Prior experience in microsurgery
  • Experience in clinical research desirable
