About Flow Cytometry & Cellular Therapies
Flow Cytometry and Cellular Therapies are part of the Haematology department. The Haematology department is committed to promoting the highest levels of quality pathology services to the Austin hospital and surrounding health care facilities.
Working as a reference laboratory for regional sites, the Heidelberg laboratory receives samples from many different specialities including maternity and neonates, liver and kidney transplantation, haematology and oncology and the emergency department.
About the role
Reporting to the Principal Scientist, as a Grade 4 Medical Scientist in the Haematology team, you will work and oversee our Flow Cytometry & Cellular Therapies Laboratories in this exciting new role.
You will provide senior scientist leadership in our diagnostic Flow Cytometry lab. You will oversee complex immunophenotyping, contribute to assay development and validation and ensure high standards of quality, compliance and clinical relevance. You will also play a role in troubleshooting, staff training and continuous service improvement.
Within Cellular Therapies you will support the delivery and advancement of cell-based therapeutic services, including stem cell processing and emerging cellular therapies. The role involves participation in clinical trials, process optimisation, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. You will contribute to innovation and service expansion in a rapidly evolving field.
You will be expected to lead the department towards a future-focused, high-performing standard, which will see the Austin as leaders in the field.
A regular day will see you:
- Provide advanced scientific expertise across Flow Cytometry and Cellular Therapies laboratories
- Ensuring the smooth running of the Flow Cytometry Laboratory, and when required perform Flow Cytometry testing including sample preparation, staining, acquisition, data analysis and reporting using established protocols
- Ensuring the smooth running of the Cellular Therapies Laboratory, and when required stem cell processing, cryopreservation, thawing and related procedures and testing
- Liaise with Grade 3 Medical Scientists in each department to aid collaboration and communication between departments to aid workflow
- Mentoring and supporting junior scientist and technical staff
- Ensure all regulatory requirements are met within the department
- Liaise with Haematology Registrars and Consultants, researchers, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality patient care
About you
To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:
- Experience working in a Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) accredited Cellular Therapies laboratory
- Experience performing Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) testing by flow cytometry
- Knowledge of Quality Control, Quality Assurance programs, Accreditation standards and regulatory requirements
- Strong leadership skills
- Experience in method development, validation, verification and implementation
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- A commitment to innovation, continuous improvement and patient centred care
