About the department

The Immunology laboratory provides a comprehensive quality diagnostic immunology service to the Austin hospital and surrounding health care facilities.   

 

Working as a reference laboratory for our regional sites, the Heidelberg laboratory receives samples from many different specialities including maternity and neonates, liver and kidney transplantation, haematology and oncology and the emergency department.

 

About the role 

Reporting to the Principal Scientist of Immunology, you will work as part of a team, who are passionate about providing best practice care for our patients.

 

A regular day will see you:

  • Preforming laboratory testing, including maintenance and running of instrumentation.
  • Reviewing and interpreting results.
  • Taking appropriate action in response to critical or unexpected results and communicating effectively with Pathologists.
  • Maintaining appropriate reagent stock levels.
  • Participating in on going continuing education and professional development.

 

About you 

You will be someone who has excellent communication skills and a commitment to quality in diagnostic laboratory testing.  You bring deep expertise in developing, implementing, and optimising new testing protocols, as well as refining existing procedures to improve accuracy, efficiency, and compliance. You are comfortable introducing new methodologies, validating innovative tools, and guiding teams through change with clarity and confidence.

 

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

  • A Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine or equivalent and/or relevant science degree
  • Postgraduate experience in a diagnostic immunology setting, encompassing protein analysis techniques, serum electrophoresis interpretation, and comprehensive autoimmune and allergy testing.
  • Sound knowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with colleagues, nursing and medical staff
  • The ability to prioritise and to cope with stressful and emergency situations
