About the department

The Victorian Cancer Biobank (VCB) consortium provides a co-ordinated and integrated program that collects and distributes tissue samples to support cancer research in Victoria, Australia and throughout the world with the aim of delivering better clinical outcomes to people with cancer.  The Consortium consists of 6 members (within 3 Hubs) with Cancer Council Victoria as the lead agency.  Biobank sites are located within Austin & Eastern Health Hub, Monash Health Hub and Parkville Hub (Melbourne Health & Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre).

 

The Austin Health Tissue Bank (Victorian Cancer Biobank) operates across the Austin Hospital & Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital campuses of Austin Health, and the Mercy Hospital for Women, Heidelberg. The Eastern Health Tissue Bank is located at Box Hill Hospital. Together these form the Austin-Eastern Hub. We are situated within the Anatomical Pathology Departments and have interactions with medical staff and patients.

 

About the role 

We have an exciting opportunity for a Grade 1 Medical Scientist to join our team at Austin Health. The role reports to the Tissue Bank Manager and works closely with the medical staff and the Department of Anatomical Pathology.

 

In this role you will be responsible for consenting patients, collection and processing of biospecimens, ensure the smooth running of the laboratory, develop and maintain quality control documentation and retrieve and prepare specimens for distribution to researchers. Travel to affiliated sites will be necessary.

 

A regular day will see you handle:   

  • Patients, medical staff, pathology staff and researchers
  • Laboratory processing of human biospecimens, following standard operating procedures
  • Clinical trial and research study processing
  • Entry and annotation of clinical data using open specimen database.
  • Quality assurance/control documentation

 

About you 

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

  • A tertiary qualification in biological science, nursing or allied health discipline
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with patients and multi-disciplinary medical, nursing and scientific staff
  • Ability to be independently motivated as well as have an ability to work in a team environment
  • A flexible attitude, including the capacity to acquire new skills and multi-task
  • Accurate data entry skills and attention to detail
  • Sound written communication skills ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
