About the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is part of the Surgery, Anaesthetic & Procedural Medicine Division, and is responsible for the provision of services within the specialty to patients across Austin Health.

 

Emergency and inpatient services are based at Austin Hospital while outpatient services and endoscopy are based at the Austin Hospital and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. In addition, a consultative service is provided for other units within the Medical Centre. The Unit maintains a strong commitment to research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. 

 

About the role 

We are seeking a dedicated Intestinal Rehabilitation Fellow to join our highly specialised multidisciplinary team in managing complex inpatients and outpatients on home parenteral nutrition. This is a fixed term, part time position working 27 hours per week.

 

A regular day will see you:   

  • Collaborate with general surgical teams using a shared-care inpatient model for patients with anticipated or actual intestinal failure.
  • Provide intensive oversight of the prescription, administration, and dosing of intravenous parenteral nutrition for acute cases.
  • Deliver a consult-based service for patients referred for the management of complex and persistent intestinal failure
  • Manage outpatients with intestinal failure who require home parenteral nutrition.
  • Lead telehealth enteral access clinics for motor neurone disease and upper GI tumour patients.
  • Facilitate improved access to care for vulnerable patient groups requiring enteral access procedures.

 

About you 

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

  • Appropriate tertiary medical qualification from either an Australian Medical School or recognised overseas training.
  • Current general registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Completion of at least two core years of advanced training in gastroenterology and hepatology or similar training accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
  • Dedication to delivering excellent service - to patients, all colleagues (nursing, medical, managerial, support staff), GPs and other contact points.
