About the Information and Services Department

The Information and Services Department are responsible for the maintenance of existing assets and the delivery of environmental and technology improvements across our three main sites: Austin Hospital, Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, as well as outlying satellite facilities. The department consists Capital Works and Infrastructure, Asset Management, Support Services, Information Technology and Planning.

 

Capital developments and refurbishments provide an appropriate environment for Austin Health to deliver the healthcare and strategic objectives of the organisation for our patients, staff and visitors.

 

About the role 

As the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Advisor, you will support the construction activities and requirements of all Information and Services teams, contractors and stakeholders to maintain safe and compliant work practices on all upgrade, refurbishment and redevelopment projects across all our sites.

 

You will be located onsite due to the requirement to oversee multiple construction sites and activities at any one time. You will be based at the Austin Hospital campus, however there will be a requirement to travel to other sites to undertake HSE activities such as spot checks, monthly inspections, investigations, meetings and project inductions.

 

A regular day will see you:   

  • Identify hazards and risks in construction activities across planning, design, and construction phases; and develop mitigation strategies for incident prevention.
  • Ensure the contractor management system is working effectively in practice, including robust induction processes.
  • Maintain up to date and complaint health, safety and environment policies and procedures, and deliver timely training to project Managers following regulatory or internal changes.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture among all project stakeholders through huddle chats, posters, toolbox talks, lessons learnt workshops, training sessions, etc.
  • Monitor the environmental impacts of construction activities, such as waste management, pollution control, and resource conservation, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and contracts. 
  • Consult with Project Managers, Engineers, subcontractors, HSRs and other stakeholders to integrate requirements into project plans and ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Continuously evaluate HSE performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement measures to reduce risk and promote environmental sustainability.

 

About you 

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

  • 2-3 years of local onsite commercial construction industry experience in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Sound knowledge of OHS legislation and contemporary OHS and environmental management systems.
  • Well-developed skills in incident investigation, OHS risk assessment; OHS consultation and OHS performance analysis and reporting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining and promoting a proactive safety culture across the organisation.
