About the First Nations Health Unit

The First Nations Health Unit at Austin Health is a strategic department established to lead and coordinate efforts that improve the health, wellbeing and cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Led by the Director of First Nations Health, the Unit drives key initiatives including the implementation of the Cultural Safety Plan and Aboriginal Employment Plan, as well as oversight of the Ngarra Jarra Aboriginal Health Service. 

 

The unit leads organisation-wide efforts to embed cultural safety across all services, strengthen Aboriginal workforce development, deliver cultural education programs, and foster meaningful partnerships with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, while playing a central role in truth-telling, reconciliation, and improving institutional understanding of the historical and ongoing impacts of racism and colonisation on health outcomes.

About the role 

As the First Nations Health Education Lead, you will play a pivotal role in designing and delivering culturally safe education programs for Austin Health staff, in alignment with Austin Health’s commitment to ensuring culturally safe care for First Nations people accessing our services and engaging with our workforce and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination in the design and delivery of education.

 

A regular day will see you:   

  • Lead the design, delivery and evaluation of culturally safe education programs across Austin Health. 
  • Develop and deliver organisation-wide learning initiatives (face-to-face, online and blended). 
  • Partner with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, Traditional Owners and stakeholders to co-design culturally appropriate education. 
  • Provide expert advice and support to embed cultural safety across services, systems and workforce practices.  
  • Build workforce capability and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff development through mentoring and advocacy.  

 

About you

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

  • Demonstrated experience designing, delivering and evaluating culturally safe education programs, with strong knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and health practices.  
  • Proven ability to facilitate inclusive, evidence-based learning in a formal education or training environment.  
  • Experience mentoring, supporting and developing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students.  
  • Strong capability to co-design programs with Aboriginal communities and stakeholders to ensure cultural relevance and safety.  
  • Ability to embed cultural safety into workforce education, practice and organisational priorities, aligned with strategic plans.  

 

We value lived experience, cultural knowledge, and community connection as highly as formal qualifications. Demonstrated cultural understanding and/or strong connections to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities will be highly regarded.
