About the Surgical Anaesthesia and Procedural Medicine Division

The Surgical Anaesthesia and Procedural Medicine Division (SAPM) is part of the Operations Directorate at Austin Health. SAPM manages a number of specialties and services including theatres, Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD), outpatients and the surgical wards at the Austin and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospitals.

 

SAPM promotes a culture of delivering quality patient care, whilst providing a broad range of elective and acute surgical procedures including Liver and Renal Transplant and Cardiac Surgery. Other surgical specialties include Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Plastics, Vascular, Thoracic’s, Cardiology, ENT, Paediatrics, General Surgery, HPB, UGI, Endoscopy and Emergency surgery.

 

About the role

Reporting to the Divisional Director, you will create a shared vision, model a values-based approach and build a culture where innovation is encouraged, embraced and inspires new ways of thinking.

 

You will be accountable for the operational governance of the operating theatres, CSSD, Anaesthesia and multidisciplinary teams, and provide clinical leadership and guidance to the perioperative teams at the Austin and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. You will be responsible for the operational performance, financial quality and risk management of your portfolio, including the creation of an operational environment that emulates and facilitates achievement of Austin Health’s vision.

 

A regular day will see you:

 

  • Deliver on the Divisional operational plan ensuring that all objectives of responsibility are met, including day-to-day leadership and support to all areas in your portfolio.
  • Work in collaboration with the Divisional Director to ensure the activity, quality and financial objectives of services are successfully delivered.
  • Focus on ensuring patients receive treatment within agreed waiting times by forward planning and daily management of all key performance standards.
  • Partner with your portfolio medical leadership team to develop an aligned operational plan for the portfolio.
  • Work collaboratively with the SAPM leadership team to develop, review and secure a highly integrated, networked and performance orientated operational architecture that facilitates the delivery of efficient and effective patient-centred care clinical care.
  • Explore, investigate and champion new innovative healthcare delivery models, develop patient flow initiatives and work with others to enable effective implementation.

About you

To be successful in this role, you'll bring with you: 

  • Experience in leadership and management of a complex health service/function
  • 5+ years’ experience and demonstrated knowledge of the operating suite environment, as well as complex surgery management and planning.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to initiate and foster strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders within a dynamic environment.  
  • Knowledge of contemporary leadership models/frameworks, as well as demonstrated experience in coaching to support the development of individual, team and organisational capability.
  • Innovative approach to thinking and problem solving that results in unique and differentiated solutions.
