About the Mental Health Division

Austin Health’s Mental Health Division (MHD) provides care and services through a comprehensive range of teams to meet the needs of mental health consumers and carers throughout Victoria and beyond. Services in the MHD are located across Austin Health and in the community and include those programs governed by the Adult and Older Adult Directorate. 

 

About the role 

This is a Senior Medical Position and carries with it the professional responsibilities of clinical leadership, teaching and training as well as administrative requirements.  You will be working with a team of professionals to make a difference to consumers impacted by mental health difficulties.

 

The Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) incorporates two mental health programs:  

Adult Acute Program comprises 19 beds which provide inpatient services to people over 18 years of age who have an acute psychiatric disorder requiring specialist intervention who reside within the catchment LGAs of Banyule and Nillumbik. Four beds are contained within the Intensive Care Area (ICA), with an additional one seclusion room. Fifteen beds are in the Low Support Area (LSA) of the unit, where a sensory room is located for consumer self-regulation. The team has strong MDT support, including Pharmacist, Psychologist, Social Worker and Occupational Therapist.

 

Eating Disorder Program (EDP) which provides five inpatient beds for consumers with an eating disorder. You will not be clinically responsible for these consumers.  

 

About you 

You will be someone who has excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.

 

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Must be a registered Medical Practitioner in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent post graduate specialist qualification.
  • Experience in providing services to people with serious mental illness.
  • A commitment to community approaches to the care of the mentally ill and providing support for their families.
  • Have demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care.
  • Current APU consultants preferred but other applicants encouraged.
