About the Mental Health Division

The Mental Health Division provides care and services through a comprehensive range of teams to meet the needs of mental health consumers and carers throughout Victoria. Services are across Adult and Older Adult, Infant, Child and Youth as well as Specialty Services and can be bed based or located in the community. 

All mental health services and programs work within a clinical framework that promotes recovery-oriented practice and supported decision making. This approach to consumer wellbeing builds on the strengths of the individual working in partnership with their treating team. It encompasses the principles of self-determination and individualized treatment and care. 

About the North East Crisis Assessment and Treatment Service (NECATS) 

We are an integrated component of Austin Health’s Adult and Older Adult Mental Health program, and we pride ourselves on being consumer recovery focused. The NECATS provides highly skilled clinical assessment and treatment options and work closely with local service providers and other specialist mental health services. This is an exciting and varied position working in the areas of Crisis Assessment Team, Telephone Triage, Emergency Psychiatry Service (Emergency Dept.) and PACER (Police and Clinician Emergency Response) on a 24/7 rotating roster.  The option to work predominantly night shifts in the EPS/ Triage role is also available.  

About the role 

As a Senior Mental Health Clinician, you will be working across the 4 roles of NECATS, primarily provide an intensive outreach and/or in reach mental health service to high-risk people, as well as their families and wider service systems within the Austin Adult and Older Adult Mental Health Service catchment.  You'll work collaboratively with CATT clinicians and the broader AOAMHS staff and teams, to support people in their own environment and who are at risk of harm.   

A regular day will see you:   

• Deliver high quality care for consumers who are; 
  • being managed at home or  
  • have presented to the emergency department or  
  • have contact with police or  
  • contact our triage phone service seeking support,  
• Provide direct service in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of people and families utilising individual outreach approaches, selected treatment modalities suitable for engaging people in their recovery, which may include mental health promotion and other professional development/capacity building activities   
• Complete a high standard of accurate clinical and operational documentation and data entry in a timely and efficient manner, and in accordance with AOAMHS standards of documentation and relevant professional/mental health sector statutory requirements 

About you 

You will be someone with excellent communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills, who takes a supportive team approach to their work.  You'll have strong organisational and time management skills, as shown by a dynamic and flexible approach to workload management.   

To be successful in this role you will bring with you:   

• A relevant professional qualification in a health-related discipline (mental health nurse, social work, occupational therapy, clinical psychology including current registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency)
• 5 - 7 years' experience (discipline dependent) in a tertiary mental health setting, engaging in enhanced mental health/ risk assessment and management
• Well-developed communication skills, networking, and interpersonal skills. 
• Specialist assessment and brief crisis intervention skills,  
• Clinical formulation and diagnosis 
• Knowledge of recovery and collaborative clinical practice including complex crisis assessments   
• Specialist secondary consultations,   
• Clinical leadership,   
• Support, and oversight of delegated duties to members of the team,   
• Ability to network with stakeholders and carers,  
• Ability to participate in quality improvement activities
