About the Renal Transplantation Service 

Austin Health has established Renal Transplantation service since 1974 and completed over 1000 transplants. Currently performing about 75 cases per year, including both deceased and live donor kidney transplants; actively participating in the Australian and New Zealand Kidney Paired Exchange Program in kidney donation.  

Austin Health is also the provider for transplant surgery to several other health services as part of the Victorian Kidney Transplant Collaborative (VKTC) group, which offers live and deceased donor kidney transplant surgery to non-transplanting Renal Hub Services. including Eastern Health, Barwon Health, Bendigo Health and St Vincent’s.  Furthermore, Austin Health provides adult live donor nephrectomy surgery and involving paediatric kidney transplantation at Royal Children’s Hospital under MOU; with 50 paediatric transplants performed in the last 5 years. In addition, Austin Health plays a highly active role in procurement of abdominal organs as a Victorian and Tasmanian Abdominal Retrieval Service (VICTORS) and the State Liver Transplant Service.  

Most recently, Austin Health has successfully implemented machine perfusion program and played a leading role in this area with intention to improve quality of kidney preservation, increase utilization of donated kidneys and improve the short- and long-term transplant outcomes. Some research programs are actively progressing involving machine perfusion.   

 

About the role: 

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic Renal Transplant Surgery Fellow at Austin Health to begin in February 2027. This Fellowship position will provide further training in all components of Renal Transplant Surgery.

 

About You 

To be successful in this role you must: 

  • Exhibit a commitment to Austin Health values. 
  • Hold appropriate registration as a Medical Practitioner in Australia. 
  • Have a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or its equivalent. 
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Renal Transplant Surgery with demonstrated surgical competency. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care. 
  • Have proven capability and interest in clinical research. 
  • Exhibit a commitment to teaching of junior medical staff and surgical trainees. 
  • Be able to communicate at all levels. 
  • Have well developed teamwork and collaboration skills. 
  • Evidence of approved English language tests to meet National Boards’ English language skills registration standard 

 

There are currently five English language tests that are accepted by National Boards:  

  • Cambridge - C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (paper and computer at test centre only) 
  • IELTS Academic - International English Language Testing System (Academic – paper and computer at test centre only)  
  • OET - Occupational English Test (on paper or computer based in testing centre) 
  • PTE Academic - Pearson Test of English Academic (computer at test centre only) 
  • TOEFL iBT - Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (computer at test centre only)
